Scrubber Dryer Marking Tiles at Lincolnshire Outlet Store

We recently received a call from the cleaning manager of a large Lincolnshire outlet store to report that their scrubber dryer was marking tiles when cleaning the store floor. Clearly the machine should not be scratching or marking the floor during cleaning, so we added the store to one of our engineers call lists so that we could get to the bottom of the problem.

Marking Tiles During Cleaning

When our engineer arrived at the outlet store in Lincolnshire, he could see that the tiled floor was indeed quite badly scratched, and his first instinct was to check under the floor cleaning machine, a Viper Fang 24T Battery Powered Pedestrian Scrubber Dryer, to see if the pad and the plastic disc that holds it in place were aligned correctly. The floor cleaning machine being used in store was ideal for medium-to-large cleaning jobs and has an ergonomic design that makes navigating the display equipment easier to manage.

The cause of the marks on the floor in this instance was that the pad had been incorrectly fitted to the pad holder. When fitting a pad to the pad holder, it is held in place by a plastic centre disc, the disc must be screwed firmly in so that it forms a dish shape. In the case of this store, the disc was lying flush to the pad, causing it to make contact with the floor and therefore scratching and marking tiles as it cleaned.

After showing the cleaning manager the correct way to attach pads to the centre disc in the pad holder, our engineer was able to demonstrate that using the machine was now no longer marking the vinyl floor space. An easy problem to rectify for our engineer, but also an easy problem to avoid in the first place.

In many cases it’s possible to polish the scratches out of tiles floors using the right combination of abrasive pads. The pads are colour coded with each colour corresponding to a different cleaning purpose, whether it be a wet clean, a dry buff or a polish.

  • BLACK – Stripping Pad – Removes heavy dirt, sealants, wax.
  • BLUE – Wet Scrub/Heavy Duty Pad – Severe cleaning when wet, light stripping when dry.
  • GREEN – Light Stripping Pad – Removes dirt, scuff marks etc
  • TAN – Light clean/Buffing pad – Light – medium cleaning and buffing at the same time.
  • RED – Light clean/Buffing pad – Light clean and used for buffing.
  • WHITE – Polishing pad – To be used on a surface free of dirt for a high shine.

Generally speaking pads are colour coded using the scheme above however this can change depending on the manufacturer so always best to check.
